On November 26, 2020 Flanders became a development partner of the Mekong River Commission (MRC). Minister-President of Flanders, Jan Jambon and Dr. An Pich Hatda, the Chief Executive Officer of the MRC signed a grant agreement that includes a funding of 1.1 million EUR from Flanders spread over a period of 5 years (2021-2025). The primary aim of the support is to enhance navigation, environmental protection, and climate resilience in the four Lower Mekong countries (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam).

For Flanders, this is a milestone in its foreign policy in this important region.
